What does a successful beginning Reading chart look like?

Here are two beginning reading charts of students who are ready to start a remedial reading program. They are reading from CyberSlate Reading Book 1, beginning with the first set of sentences. (This selection consists of two short sentences made up of words with just a few sounds, and some sight words. The sentences are “Tap on a pad.”, and “Pat is a tad sad.” The students have already reviewed the “a” sound and the consonant sounds. The word “is” is introduced as a sight word.

In her first few attempts, Celestine doubles her score each time she tries the exercise, resulting in a x16 acceleration. (The average acceleration for public school students is x1.13.) She passes into the second exercise within 5 days. It takes more days to pass through the second exercise, but each time she increases her score, resulting in a doubling of scores each week.

Celestine is making rapid (x2) progress each time she reads the passage.

Matt passes through the first levels within days because he completes the exercise several times each day, as indicated by the dots in the bottom cycle of the chart. When he settles into two sessions per day, his progress is still x2 per week.

The high number of sessions each day occurred while Matt was enrolled in CyberLaunchPad, an intensive half-day program in which Matt was able to study the passages and complete several supporting exercises between sessions.

No two charts of progress will be exactly alike, but it is useful to make comparisons. If your chart shows celerations similar to those of Celestine and Matt, and passing to the next story within days, you are off to a good start.
